Joining the Library

How to join

Membership of the Timaru District Libraries is free for all residents and ratepayers of the Timaru District.

Your Library card ensures that you can borrow from any of the District Libraries at Timaru, Temuka and Geraldine.

Please bring your Library card every time you visit the Library.

Please do not lend your Library card to other people - you are responsible for all materials borrowed on your card and for any charges for overdue, lost or damaged items.

When joining the library please bring proof of address and identification.

Suitable identification and proof of address required for joining the library:

  • Bank Card (with signature)
  • Birth Certificate
  • Over 18 ID Card
  • Polytech Student ID
  • Community Services Card
  • Other Student ID
  • Drivers Licence
  • Passport
  • Electricity Invoice
  • Firearms Licence
  • Rates Invoice
  • Listed in the Local Telephone Directory
  • Listed in the Local Electoral Roll

Lost cards

Please notify the Library immediately if your card is lost or stolen, there is a charge of $5.50 for a replacement Library card.

Change of details

Please let us know promptly if there are any changes to your contact details e.g. address, email address, or telephone number, so that we can update your record.

Subscription Membership

If you do not qualify for free membership to the Timaru District Libraries you can pay an annual subscription to join.

Subscription Charges: 12 months = $120.00

Visitor Membership

Visitors to the region are able to join the Library on a temporary basis (by paying a $20 refundable deposit) with restricted borrowing rights.

Borrowing Items

Most items are issued for 4 weeks. There is no limit to the number of items you can borrow with the exception of some limitations in the Children's Library.

Items are issued for 4 weeks (except for Magazines, Adult DVDs, Children's DVDs, Videos and PlayStation Games which are issued for 2 weeks) and may be renewed for a further 4 weeks (Magazines, Adults and Children's DVDs, Videos and PlayStation Games can be renewed for 2 weeks).

Overdue charges apply on any items more than 2 days overdue.

To check items on loan or to renew items, phone your Library, ask at the Issue Desk, renew online via the Library Catalogue (you will need a password/pin - contact us to get one) or by email.

Items that have holds on them, or have already been renewed, may not be renewed.

Personal email reminders will be sent to borrowers three days before their items are due to be returned or renewed.
